crazy sketch page

an acid trip of a sketch page from one of my sketchbooks

This is a page I’ve been meaning to upload for awhile just because of the craziness it encompasses. There’s some Venture Bros. fanart, a sketch where I went to town with the cross-hatching, a zombie, a really happy looking and blue-tinted panda, an acid trip rippling across the bottom, and the lineart for the face in the middle bit is actually based on the main character of the anime Desert Punk, and you may recognize that I used a similar look for the character featured in the expressions page I uploaded just a little while back. Click on the image to see a larger version, where you can actually get to the details, and enjoy!

expressions

emotional expressions and some zombie heads

There was a challenge on DeviantArt for awhile to do 25 expressions for your original character of choice. It’s obviously a great way to practice and an even better way to flesh out a character. This character has no name, and I have my doubts that I’ll actually use him again — I have a feeling he was inspired by the central character from the anime Desert Punk (I know it’s crude humor, but I, for one, actually think it’s pretty awesome!). Then of course, I threw in some zombie heads across the top because that’s how I roll. Click the pic if you wanna actually get a good look at the different faces, and sorry for any erroneous lines, this was sort of a quick exercise, and as such, I left in some of my pencil guidelines that should’ve been erased.

skanky girl and the elephant man

a character concept and working on those skin tones

The top profile is of a character design idea for a guy called The Elephant. I really want to use him because he has the creepy cool that any character in a gas mask seems to achieve. The girl looks a lot more skanky than I had intended her to be, but it seemed like the most logical route: draw a girl showing too much skin in order to practice coloring skin. I used some Copics, E00 and E02, I believe. I wouldn’t expect her to recur in anything later; although, I do like the way her hair came out. The colors that aren’t her skin are, once again, colored with Sharpies. I know — for shame, for shame.

a different take on the South Park central cast

Awhile back I got in the mood to try my hand at redoing the central cast of South Park. This was what I came up with. Unfortunately, I was using Sharpie markers (as I do tend to do from time to time for colors), and the colors didn’t come out so hot. Either way, just a fun little picture I thought I’d include.

a traditional Japanese room

This was a bit of practice from my sketchbook. I’m trying to get better at developing real locations for my comics and artwork, and so far I’ve been pretty crappy at it. This, however, was some vanishing point practice, where I attempted to fully develop a single location with a single vanishing point. Hopefully someday I’ll learn enough patience and have enough practice to actually incorporate settings like this into my other work.

some goofy portraits of Blanka and Ryu from Street Fighter

some goofy portraits of Blanka and Ryu from Street Fighter

These were just some for fun sketches I threw together. I like coloring things, and I often get impatient while drawing, leading to half-assed crap a lot of the time. I try to alternate between doing lots of fast drawings, and then taking a period of weeks where I take my time with everything, try to improve, and then go back to fast drawing to see how that’s improved, which actually seems to move my drawing along pretty well as a whole. Anyway, so I just grabbed the brush pen (smaller than the one I used for Akuma) and quickly through down some lines and colored these in. Might do more; they’re pretty fun. And if you’re wondering why A) the markers look like crap or B) why the markers look halfway decent even tho they’re clearly not that great a brand, it’s because they’re Sharpies. I use sharpies to color a lot because it’s pretty cheap to get about 30 colors and just go to town; though, I left them in the States, and imagine I’ll be buying more Copics as time goes on here.
